Welcome to BMW LR Great Danes, the home of BMW excellence. We are Dr. Bill and Dorothy La Rosa.

Our first Dane, CH BAK Anastasia, aka “Apache”, was a wonderful, good moving bitch.  She was sold to us on the condition that she be shown in conformation ring.  This led to our addiction to these grand Harlequin Great Danes.

We were introduced to Laura Kiaulenas who had a reputation of being quiet and reserved, and told she probably wouldn’t be interested in talking with us.  As it turned out, we never stopped talking thereafter!  Laura became our mentor and very dear friend and the source of our subsequent Harlequins.  Because of Laura, we combined her holistic principles with our conventional science and became believers in a more natural approach to canine genetics, nutrition and care.

It was Laura who alerted us to the vaccine controversy.  I thought that if this anecdotal evidence of side effects was true, then maybe the Great Danes were sentinels to vaccine related sequelae in humans as well.  As a Trustee of the Hayward Foundation, Bill persuaded the Foundation to fund a long-term vaccine study at Purdue University. This study is now in its last stage and has been instrumental in bringing these anecdotal concerns to a scientific basis of concern.

It has certainly brought the vaccine concern to the general Veterinary academia, and now almost all the Vet schools are recommending fewer vaccines and altering their frequency, largely due to the findings at Purdue.  It is a pity that Laura did not live to see her beliefs brought to a more scientific conclusion.

After Laura passed away, her mother, Vassia, asked us to continue the BMW name but we elected to modify it with our initials, LR.  There will never be another Laura, but several of us, her students and protégés, are attempting to carry on the banner of the BMW excellence.

Our Danes can do it all. They are athletes who can hunt, swim in our lake, chase squirrels, raccoons, boars possums and deer and still be outstanding show dogs.  Visitors are always welcome to come see and enjoy our Danes with us.
